The Fortress of Leiden

The Fortress of Leiden

Leiden, the Netherlands

This is the fortress of Leiden. In medieval Leiden, everyone in the town could live inside the fortress to withstand a siege. I don’t know if it was ever used. I still haven’t been in it, because they close the fortress on windy days. I’m going to go some day this next week before/after Dutch class. The main symbol seen, the red crossed keys, are the shield of Leiden. The represent St. Peter’s keys to heaven (a sing of early Dutch influence).
