Some of you may remember that I got new glasses last year. Those of you who actually see me on a regular basis know that I don't wear either of the glasses I purchased; I've been wearing my two old pairs for the last year.
But, Leah, why purchase glasses that you don't wear? So what is the prescription is slightly different? Can't you just get used to it?
Thankfully, today, I learned that I am not crazy. The prescription in my new glasses was wrong, and I have been vindicated.
After wearing my old glasses, with chipping paint and a look I've had for way too many years (okay, 6 years for the top pair and 3 for the bottom) for too long, I decided to actually go get my vision checked. Thanks to health insurance, it was only $15 for a comprehensive eye appointment.
The good news is that my vision is great. It's terrific, fabulous, and snazzy. I still have the same prescription (-1.25 in both eyes) that I've had since I was 12 or so. My reading vision is beyond amazing as long as I don't wear my normal glasses.
The bad news is that my 'scrip from the "new" glasses really is wrong. The doctor tried to go -1 in my right eye, and I'm sensitive enough to the change that I can't wear the prescription without getting a headache. The optometrist here said that I should always wear the same 'scrip in both eyes.
So, I've now got to make a decision. Should I replace the lenses in the two pairs of glasses I've got? Or should I donate them and go for entirely new glasses? Due to last year's insurance, I only paid $5 for these two pairs, so it wouldn't be a huge loss. To get the lenses replaced at my school's vision clinic would be upwards of $350-400, and I just don't have that sort of spare cash. I need to replace both lenses, as it's pretty important to make sure they're both done the same way. I'm going to go back to JC Penny and see if they'll be willing to cut me a deal on the lenses at all due to their screwup, but I'm not optimistic. I complained to them after 6 months with the new glasses, and they said there was nothing they could do, so I doubt another 6 months would help.
The other possibility is to go for an online, mail-in type of place. I suppose the worst that could happen is that they would break/lose/ruin my glasses somehow. $39 glasses lets you send in your own frames, and it seems like it would be less than $150 to replace the lenses in both pairs. It would also be an upgrade, since I only have polycarbonate in one pair (other pair has plastic lenses).
On the fence. I've got some thinking to do. But I really would like to have this whole mess done with so that I can use my glasses again.
Oh, one last note, with apologies to my mom: I broached the subject of eye surgery, and the doctor said I'm a horrible candidate for it. Apparently, when you have really stable, fairly good vision and super good up close vision, you really shouldn't get the eye surgery. He said having eye surgery would ultimately harm my up close vision. Personally, I'd rather stick with my glasses and not need reading glasses. Therefore, world, you will always see me with glasses :-)
