How old were you when you stopped trick-or-treating? Is there an age where you stop handing candy out to trick-or-treaters?
The last year I went out for candy on Halloween, I was 16. I didn't properly trick-or-treat, really; I was going around with a 15 year old friend and her little brother, and I didn't receive candy at every house. I was dressed in a medieval dress, but the costume didn't take tons of work.
I don't remember the last year I actively trick-or-treated. I think it was 8th grade, perhaps? My brother and I would trick-or-treat together, and he'd continue alone when I got sick of running around to houses.
So, to answer the question, I stopped really trick-or-treating sometime between the ages of 14 and 16. I'd nail it down closer if I could, but I don't rightly remember. Halloweens here all kind of blend together; I moved here when I was 12, so there weren't too many out and about years after the move.
I do have fond memories of going around in Nebraska and getting special treats from neighbors. Plus, we lived in a neighborhood full of kids, so pretty much everyone gave out candy.
I don't have any real hard and fast rules about giving out candy. My mom and I have handed out treats to 18 year olds before because they had a clever costume. One year, two guys came by around 9.30, and we hadn't had any trick-or-treaters for awhile. They were dressed in sharp business suites with briefcases to hold the candy. My mom gave them everything we had left instead of letting it sit around the house.
I'm always surprised when people do refuse to give away candy to older kids. When I went around at 16, I had some people tell me I was too old for being out, and they didn't give me anything. I've always thought of that as mean spirited.
What about the rest of you? Do all (or any) of you give out candy on Halloween? Any guidelines for it?
