In the past week, I've been to the post office three separate times to email ebay stuff (I'm trying to sell like a mad fiend, and it's working decently). I'm even getting to know the post office staff; one guy has served me practically every time I've been there. When I bring packages up, all he says is "more CDs?" It's nice, because the transaction goes smoothly.
Anyway, today, there were a couple of people at a card table outside my post office. When I left, they asked me if I had any time. I didn't, really, but I gave them a few minutes in which they talked off my ear about voting. And it wasn't just ANY voting; they were no normal canvassers. No, they were LaRouche people.
I've joked around that I'm going to write in Michael Dukakis for my vote. It might be at about the same level as voting for LaRouche.
I don't know much about the guy, but I do know he's a candidate out in left field. I've got to leave for work in a minute, so I'll read his page later and post if there's anything interesting. I think he's in jail, or was in jail . . . and people campaign for him in every election.
According to the people at the post office, his new thing is supporting Kerry -- to get Bush out of office -- and then trying to get the people to press on Kerry and the Democrats in general to make their platform better for the standard American citizen. Again, according to the POP (post office people), the poorest 50% of the country aren't represented in government, don't have a voice, and aren't even polled in the predictions for the election. The POP were convinced that, if we could just galvanize all the marginalized members of society in key battleground states (ie Oregon -- they were so excited to learn that I'm living there right now), then we could make a difference in the country.
I ended up leaving with some booklets . . . . I'll give one a read, I think. Can't hurt. But, still . . . I'm a little skeptical. I didn't donate any money to them, because I have no clue where it would go (really, if I wanted to donate money to a political cause, I'd send it to move on).
I'm saddened, tho . . . I don't know if these kids will actually make a difference in the election, or even tons of people like them. I'm not sure if it'll even matter. Hell, I'm not even sure if there will be an election; word on the street is that Cheney wants to put into action a plan to "postpone" elections in the event of "terrorist actions."
Um . . . wouldn't it be really convenient if they paid some terrorists to do something so they could "postpone" the elections until the "terrorist threat" is deal with? As most of the political writers I've read all agree, terrorism is a problem that's here to stay. And it'd be creepy if we had a law that allowed our own government to hijack elections because of terrorism.
Anyway, just some thoughts, and more to follow as I flush this out a little more in my head.
